Newcastle Volunteering with Reach Homeless Service
The most valuable asset Reach Homeless Services has is the tireless and dedicated team of volunteers, and we welcome the assistance of our community members in helping to care for our vulnerable members. A mix of regular and sporadic volunteers keep our team alive, and at Reach we know that not everyone can make a regular commitment. Do what you can!
Our volunteers undertake a variety of roles including:
- Packing emergency food and hygiene kits for distribution on Friday nights. This activity takes place typically on weekdays in the early evening and lasts for a couple of hours. We find that family and work groups are keen to undertake this work as it can be performed by anyone of any age.
- Friday nights are where our team of around 6-8 volunteers meet and set up for the evening at around 7:00pm (time can vary depending on season). Our volunteers will rotate around a variety of roles such as BBQ ‘chef’, food server, Covid-19 administrator, distributer of food and hygiene packs, distributer of Connecting the Hunter vouchers etc.
- Reach Homeless Services also has a volunteer community nurse.
- Often on a Friday night we are assisted by other community groups who provide additional food, clothing and hairdressing.
